Athletics Day

This year I ran the Senior Athletics Day and helped run the Junior Athletics Day. This was a great experience as we had Kelly Sports onboard with providing coaches for each activity. Both days really well and the students had a great time.

Usually Athletics Day is a school wide event. However, due to the weather this year, we split it over two days. The Juniors had their day on the Tuesday and the Seniors had theirs changed to the Friday.

In previous years they have been all tabloid events such as obstacle courses, egg and spoon race, etc. This year we decided to change it and give the seniors more competitive events they'd be competing in for Inter-School Athletics. This included high jump, long jump, discus, shot put and sprints. I felt as if this would appeal more to the seniors given they enjoy more competitive activities.

Each teacher was given a recording sheet to find the top three for each event. This made it much easier to choose those students coming to Inter-Schools.

Overall, these both successful days and everyone enjoyed themselves. I was very happy with how the Senior Athletics day went as I organised that.

Touch Rugby Day

Today I took my first team to a sports day. I had to organise the RAMs forms, team names, health list, lunches, uniforms, etc. This was a great experience as I am now able to see what is needed when it comes to organising a team for sports event days.

I chose to take one team of Year 7 and 8 Boys as I wanted to ensure I knew the organisation behind it first. We did three trainings in total before the day and this allowed the team and I to build some teamwork skills as well as improve on ur overall game.

My team did really well on the day and we made it to the finals against Point England School. We placed second overall and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  Our team was very well behaved and showed some great sportsmanship throughout the day. It was a great first experience for a sports day.

Senior Syndicate Sports Person

In Term 2 an opportunity came up for me to take over the role of sport leader for the senior syndicate. This was a huge step for me as this will be the first time I have led a curriculum area.

We (Principal, Junior Sport Leader and myself) had our first Sports meeting yesterday with Sport Auckland. We created our plan for the term and I look forward to implementing and guiding the team I’m a part of in this area.

I attended the Manaiakalani Sports meeting which has helped me to gain a clearer perspective around the organisation of PE in a school and how inter school sporting competitions run. Following on from this meeting I made contact with our Kelly Sports manager to organise the rotations of lessons for the senior syndicate for Term 3.

I look forward to this new journey and the new learning I have ahead of me. My next step is to pay close attention to date deadlines so that we are in the position of being able to choose coaching times that work best for our school, and we don’t miss out on inter school team registrations.

HAL PD

During Term 1 we had term long PD dedicated to Healthy Active Learning Support, this was facilitated by James. The main aim of the PD was to focus on wellbeing and get learners active in a fun way through the use of games.

Hauora is a Maori philosophy specifically targeting the health and wellbeing of New Zealand societies. Hauora is split into 4 domains physical wellbeing, mental and emotional wellbeing, spiritual wellbeing and social wellbeing. These domains create the four walls of a whare. All domains are necessary to create strength and symmetry.

During our PD meeting several games were demonstrated that we could take into the classroom. This included a Pasifika mirroring game, Cone Stack and 22 Skidoo. These were easy yet effective games that required a small amount of PE equipment and minimal planning. They would make great daily fitness games for the morning or even brain breaks throughout the day. They were all targeted at making fitness both fun and beneficial as oppose to a burden.

I believe this PD has had a very positive effect on both the students and myself. As a class we are all enjoying our daily fitness sessions and the students are getting visibly more fit and active.
