Reading Programme

At a glance I am able to see a shift in the instructional level for majority of my students. I noticed in Term 2 that the learners lacked a lot in comprehension based on their Running Records. They were able to read with great fluency but didn't understand what they were reading or how to answer questions. This is what influenced my decision to keep them on that instructional level.

Going forward we worked a lot on comprehension through extended discussion with peers. This has been implemented since Term 2 and has shown a great improvement in learners overall understanding of the text.

Another change I've made was including large laminated scaffolds for inferring, synthesising, summarising and evaluation. These have been very beneficial as completing these as a group has meant they have to collaborate ideas prior to completing their individual task. Students are then showing more confidence completing these templates independently after being given the opportunity to share ideas amongst one another.

Green - instructional level

Red - difficult

Orange - test not required

Below shows one student (black). The first photo shows a PM Running Record on "black" completed in term 1 and the next is completed in term 2. The term 1 results shows a lack in understanding of summarising, however the results for the following test shows an increase shift in their ability to summarise. By implementing the summarising template and extended discussion this has built the learners confidence and knowledge to summarise the text. Another improvement that can be seen is the learners capacity to answer inferential questions in term 2.
